ABSTRACT

Depression is distinguished by feeling ill. This sense of illness is characterized by inner moods of feeling despondent for most of the day, tiredness, tearfulness, loss of interest in usually pleasurable activities, and feeling that nothing matters. These moods are usually brought on by inner body panic and other physical disturbances of sleep, activity, appetite and digestion that then go on to ®ll out the conventional clinical picture. Apart from these inner disruptions the sights and sounds of the outside world too can feel like an assault. So depression is an illness of severance ± one's normal contact with the inner and outer life is severed.
