ABSTRACT
I have found…the Church of England very much esteemed by all the men of learning I met with abroad.
Last week I went to see the treasure of Saint Denis…whilst I was observing these curiosities with much attention; a Priest told me seriously that if I would but touch those Holy Relicks, it might convert me, upon which I replied, that if by touch I could but convert those precious stones into gold and silver for my own use, I should make a better use of them, upon which he laughed, and so ended our dispute upon Religion; upon which subject the women of this country as well as all other countries often dispute about, for they generally think that their own religion is the best and in France I have been often obliged to defend my religion against the Ladys, whose arguments and persons may be very powerful and persuasive in all cases except that of religion.
