ABSTRACT

Influences on happiness or unhappiness come from several different directions and combine in different ways for different people. One person's unhappiness at work may be mainly due to job content, whereas someone else's can be more a question of personality. The anxious kind of unhappiness usually comes from high demands and overload, whereas depression comes more from underload, failure to get where one want to be, or sheer boredom. Many people expect to live with some negative aspects in their world because those are outweighed by positive themes; that balancing process applies in a job as well as elsewhere. An individual's feelings are fairly similar when they switch and change jobs, because that's the way people are. Two people in the same job situation can feel quite differently about it – they have different thinking styles, interpreting the same world in different ways.
