ABSTRACT

At a time of polarizing political tensions and profound misunderstanding of contemporary Middle Eastern peoples, cultures, religions, and histories, teaching literature of today’s Middle East takes on singular importance. The knowledge generated in classrooms examining literature from today’s Middle East needs to be shared beyond the classroom walls. Knowledge creates responsibility, and an important component of reading and studying this literature is teachers and students thinking together about how students can communicate with others about what they are learning. Doing so can include activities and projects in their own school and community, developing online resources, creating connections to people in the Middle East and related organizations, and becoming active citizens.
