Interest in communal societies In recent years communal societies have aroused much public interest. This interest has been active and, more commonly, vicarious. Many people see communal living as an appropriate response to the materialism and alienation of present-day society. Others are simply fascinated by the practical steps some people take to make communal life a reality. Communal societies, it seems, appeal to that part of us which is idealistic and romantic.
