ABSTRACT

An earlier title of this chapter was, ‘When things go wrong.’ Perhaps it would have been better to stick to that more literal version, but I was attracted by the metaphorical possibilities of ‘Shadows’ : it captures the point made in the previous chapter that shadows are the inevitable result of light and that unintended consequences abound. It implies an area of darkness where we do not see clearly what is going on. It evokes the possibility of shapes left behind when a person is no longer present. I want to touch on all of these.
