Beliefs can encourage or inhibit movement towards goals and are often at the heart of coaching experiences. It follows, then, that in order to coach themselves or others towards a more emotionally intelligent way of living, the children need fi rstly to be aware of beliefs (see page 56). Second, they will need to know how to challenge the unhelpful ones when they arise. We have used Figure 14.1 on 68 to structure some activities to raise awareness and suggest challenges followed by a grid to provide some suggestions of practical approaches to coaching self.
