ABSTRACT

Self-destructive behaviors create many opportunities for potential power struggles especially when standard safety contracts are an integral part of treatment. We must be clear about what we can and can’t control. Wicks (2008) emphasized this in his work as well, noting the loss of energy and the wasted energy that results from a refusal to let go of the things that are not within our control to change. Operating from a place of humility, we have to let go of what we can’t control.
