ABSTRACT

You may be particularly vulnerable when working with this population if you grew up with parents with a substance abuse problem, an eating disorder, a gambling or sexual addiction, or other forms of destructive behavior. is is especially powerful if your parent is not in recovery or died without recovering. Unresolved feelings of rage, resentment, grief, and helplessness that live within us can easily be rekindled if our clients relapse or are not ready to relinquish destructive behaviors. Because we are human, these countertransferential responses can find their way into session and are noticed by clients who are hypervigilant.
