ABSTRACT

Titles such as xiansheng (Mr), nwshì (Madam), xikojie (Miss) are now being used more and more. The term tóngzhì (comrade) is on its way out, although it is still used amongst people in their sixties and seventies. Professional titles such as j cnglm (manager), jiàoshòu (professor), lkoshc (teacher) are used as forms of address. For example, if someone is called Lm X cnzi, and he/she is a teacher,

this person can be addressed and referred to as Lm Lkoshc (lit. ‘Li teacher’).
