ABSTRACT

If he had spoken of “emotional tone” instead of “weight,” it would have been clear that he was describing the phenomenon of a complex. Elsewhere, he describes what makes an experience memorable. The brain’s amygdala “turns on all sorts of bodily systems, including the autonomic nervous system,” resulting in the release of adrenalin from the adrenal glands (LeDoux 1996: 207). An emotional charge activates a network of associations, makes them memorable, and renders their image of the world and what we should do about it nearly irresistible.
