ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a base for the rationale of design-identifying and telling the story rather thanapplying set typologies that may not be appropriate for the specific context. Hence the reference to creative urbanism. I am not trying to start a new movement in design, merely to explore and expand the many factors of urban life or urban meaning that are critical to and influence design process, methodologies, and outcomes. Essentially, I am exploring new methodologies to deal with the complexities of urban meaning and functionality as they are formed by the interaction of culture, space, and time. This part is a discussion, a dialogue of directions and relationships I have seen emerging over the last 42 years of practice and 21 years of teaching in urban design. I believe strongly in the need to experiment with new methods in order to address the complexity of urban reality.
