ABSTRACT

Gluttony is not glamorous. Compared to the sins we have discussed before, gluttony is by far the least attractive. It has nothing of the glory of pride or the awesomeness of anger. It does not shine with the strategic brilliance of envy or greed, and cannot compete with the savvy melancholic depression of the slothful. Gluttony is rather associated with animal-like qualities, but then without the sexy beastliness of lust. Gluttony manifests in eating and drinking, and ends up in heaviness, hangover, and the shame of satiation. Gluttony is usually associated with eating, and hence with the body. Although I will focus on this meaning here, gluttony can also express itself in other forms of consumption, be they material or spiritual.
