ABSTRACT

Upon their return from Wei-Hai-Wei early in the autumn of 1930, Anette and Marie-Louise began to attend the Danish School, which now had more than 20 students distributed over four classes. English was the language most commonly used by Shanghailanders and the Meyer girls, particularly the two youngest, spoke English together more and more frequently. It was thus important for them to learn Danish properly and Kirsten insisted that the four girls speak Danish with their parents.
