ABSTRACT
When Vilhelm went to the United States for the first time in 1906 he had been impressed by the big, dynamic country and its rapidly expanding economy. This was a truly golden age of rapid growth for both the population and production. Vilhelm noticed, too, that as America began to play an important economic and political role globally, the American political debate was increasingly focusing on U.S. relations with the outside world.
