ABSTRACT
In the midst of the expenses scandal that engulfed British party politics in the spring of 2009, the then Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, made the following comment in a BBC interview: ‘To be honest, what I’ve seen offends my Presbyterian conscience. What I’ve seen is something that is appalling’ (BBC News, 31 May 2009).
