ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the mosaic of political moods that have shaped the regions within the Russian Far East (hereafter RFE) during the 1990s. The colour scale includes various hues of black, white and red, with the predominance of this or that shade being determined to large degree by the nature of relationships between federal and local authorities. The RFE cannot be considered a unified political space, not only because of the immense distances between regional capitals, but also because, for the moment at least, there is no unifying power to pull it together.
