ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the transport system of the Russian Far East (RFE) and how it has changed since the late 1980s. The state of the system at that time has already been described by the present author (North 1990). Here we begin with a summary of that paper, then examine in turn changes in institutional and traffic-generating conditions; the impact of change on specific transport modes and sub-regions; and the prospects for transport in the RFE.
