ABSTRACT

Those of you reading this book will probably be sitting at a desk, in a seat on a vehicle of some sort, in an armchair or possibly lying in bed. You will also probably be alone or, if not alone, you will not be expecting or even wanting to talk to those around you about what you are reading, or at least not immediately. For most of us, reading is largely, unless we particularly choose it not to be so, an activity conducted in silence and alone, physically, though we may of course not feel lonely as we engage in an interior discourse with another person’s written words.
