ABSTRACT

Throughout this text we have seen how the process of becoming intimately connected to another person provides an opportunity to experience love and satisfaction, to give and receive emotional and social support, and often-particularly if the relationship is a romantic one-to experience passion, joy, and excitement. All of these experiences, in turn, can enhance and promote an individual’s psychological and physical well-being. But relationships can also be a potent source of emotional pain and psychological hurt, particularly when they involve rejection, deceit, or betrayal.
