ABSTRACT

In terms of career, Bolan “made it” too, in an industry that was pre - dominantly run by men. After rising to the level of general manager at I.R.S., she moved on to Virgin Records America, and eventually became senior director of international marketing for industry giant Rhino Entertainment. Along the way she promoted such artists as Tina Turner, the Spice Girls, Lenny Kravitz, R.E.M., and David Bowie. Bolan’s rise through the industry was not without its awkward moments. She was often the only woman in the room at convention gatherings, and for years was the only woman at weekly I.R.S. executive meetings. When she became pregnant shortly after the big break for The Go-Go’s, Bolan was understandably worried about disclosing the news, as her pregnancy marked another significant first at I.R.S. Although the company responded favorably, her announcement sent a puzzled label execu - tive in search of his father for advice about how to handle the situation.1
