ABSTRACT
The subject of early Islam is both extremely important and extremely fascinating. It is important because hundreds of millions of Muslims believe, or are supposed to believe, that every detail of their lives should be determined in accordance with what was allegedly said or done in Arabia in the seventh century Ce. It is fascinating because at the moment a profound change is taking place in the study of the evidence, as what was previously repeated without question is now being challenged or discarded.
