ABSTRACT

This second chapter seeks to enrich the approach taken in the previous chapter by examining the tourist shopping villages from a range of different perspectives. An array of impacts, issues and development strategies will be explored. Discussion in Chapter 1 reported the importance of shopping to the tourism industry. The chapter introduced the concept of a tourist shopping village and provided a typology of different styles of tourist shopping. A consideration of the typology and a discussion of some distinctive features of tourist shopping villages suggested a need to study this form of tourism in a comprehensive context of contemporary leisure and development concerns. The approach adopted in this volume and specifi cally in this chapter is to further the study of tourist shopping villages through an expansive and critical approach to sustainability and quality of life concerns (Costanza, et al. 2007).
