ABSTRACT

Hayk means Armenians in the native tongue. Hayk, the eponym of the mythical founder of the Armenian people, is said to have been the son of Togarmah (T’orkom in Armenian), grandson of Japhet, son of Noah (Gen. X. 1-3). That is the legendary version of the nation’s roots. However, the two names — Hayk and T’orkom (Togarmah) — each in its own right, possibly represents the nucleus of the Armenian nation, with the people and civilisation of Urartu superimposed upon and absorbed by it.
