ABSTRACT

Hydarnes III was succeeded by his son, Terituchmes. His daughter, Stateira, married the Persian Great King, Artaxerxes II (404-358). Their daughter, Rhodogune, was given in marriage to Ervand (Orontes-Oroandes), son of Artasyras, the ‘King’s Eye’, sometimes called ‘Orontes the Bactrian’, because of his princely, Bactrian parentage. For important services rendered to the king, Ervand-Orontes was not only given the hand of the king’s daughter, but was also elevated to the satrapy of Eastern Armenia. In fact he would have been more of a viceroy, since he was himself of royal blood and had also married into the Persian royal family. Armenian tradition recognises him under the name ‘Ervand’.
