ABSTRACT

A successful revolt against Ervand IV by two princes of his own royal house, Artashes and Zareh, probably instigated by Antiochus the Great (223-187 BC), in accordance with a policy of divide and rule, destroyed Ervand. Under the aegis of Antiochus, two Syrio-Macedonian tribute-paying provinces appeared in Armenia: Greater Armenia, 1 the lands east of the Euphrates (Firat) almost to the Caspian under Artashes, and the province of Sophene under Zareh, both strategi of Antiochus. Three Aramaic stelae discovered near Lake Sevan, record the fact that Zareh was the father of Artashes and that they were Orontids. 2
