ABSTRACT

The previous chapters introduced the rise of Urartu from small beginnings, as a principality sometimes helped by and sometimes helping neighbouring Hurrian communities against the common enemy, Assyria. The history of Urartu is documented from 1275 BC. Urartu’s wars with Assyria continued under the latter’s kings, Tukulti-Ninurta I (c. 1230 BC), Tiglath-pileser (c. 1060 BC), their successors, and King Ashur-nasir-pal II (884-859 BC), either directly or by way of the Nairi principalities, which were constantly influenced by anti-Assyrian propaganda, probably originating from Urartu.
