ABSTRACT

The European Union (EU) has developed apace since its early formation through the Treaty of Rome in 1950. Then it was a body focused upon economic matters set up as a means to ensure peace in Europe. Now it has widened to cover a broad range of social concerns which include the environment, culture, education, justice, security, health, employment, and social rights. Almost sixty years after its inception, the EU has become a signifi cant policy-making and regulatory body which has an infl uential role in steering the laws and activities of its Member States.1
