ABSTRACT

Probability is a topic in metaphysics in its own right – the central question here being, ‘what are probabilities?’ This is sometimes cast as a question about what the right ‘interpretation’ of probability is. Mathematically, a ‘probability’ is just anything that satisfies the axioms of the probability calculus (see later). However, that does not tell us how we should ‘interpret’ that calculus: what in the world makes a claim that involves appeal to probability true? Probability also crops up elsewhere in metaphysics, in particular in discussions about causation, where indeterminism appears to require us to adopt a probabilistic theory of causation.
