ABSTRACT
This is a close paraphrase of Hume’s (1739-40: 172) famous ‘first definition’ of causation, but beware: it is unclear whether he was really intending to define causation at all. It is best to avoid interpretative controversy and think of the regularity theory as a ‘Humean’ theory, rather than Hume’s theory.
