ABSTRACT
The urge to seek efficient population policies has tended to force the colourful spectre of familial relations and cultural worlds into a causal demographic analysis which does not consider contextualized living worlds. In the preceding ethnographically oriented, descriptive chapters I have presented my view of the way population phenomena could be fruitfully studied – by taking ethnography seriously when looking for the cultural logic of South Indians having only a few children.
