ABSTRACT

Every time Liza put her 4-month-old baby in his car seat, she had visions of him sliding out of the seat (after being carefully strapped in), somehow being hurled out the car window (though it was winter and all the windows were shut), and his little body splattering onto the roadway. It didn’t stop her from driving, but it often kept her from making trips alone with the baby if she had to drive far. When her husband told her she was being ridiculous for worrying so much about driving, she decided to tell him exactly what she was afraid of and shared the details of her private thoughts. Hoping for a reprieve, Liza sank further when her husband agreed that driving the baby was not a good idea. After all, if she was afraid the baby would fall out of the car, then she shouldn’t have the baby in the car with her. He continued to ramble on about her questionable driving skill. Liza stopped listening right about the time he said he would get his mother to take the baby to all future doctor appointments.
