ABSTRACT

It is easy to argue that mathematics plays a major role in our modern society; in fact, it is hard to avoid reaching this conclusion. As an example, consider the journey that a teacher has to undertake. To be admitted onto a teacher training course, you have to demonstrate a certain level of mathematical ability. In order to qualify, you have to pass a numeracy skills test. You then end up working in schools which are judged on their GCSE results – with particular weighting given to the subjects of English and … mathematics. This experience is common to teachers of all subjects, not just mathematics specialists. Whilst it might be a cliché, it is certainly true that ‘maths counts’.
