ABSTRACT
Mathematics has always been closely associated with science. Skills learnt in mathematics enable progress and exploration in science, and scientifi c applications offer exciting examples of mathematics in action which can motivate and inspire learners of all ages. This mutually supporting relationship led the mathematician and writer E.T. Bell to describe mathematics as the ‘queen and servant of science’ (Bell 1951).
