ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 illustrated how shifts in public discourses after the July 1, 2003 protest led to a recognition of the civic quality of Hong Kong people and the legitimization of peaceful and orderly protests as a powerful means for citizens to express their opinions. But at the same time, from the analysis we also see that media discourses did not turn immediately and overwhelmingly to the issue of democratization. With the exception of Apple Daily, democratic reform was only one among a range of suggested solutions to the social crisis at the time.
