ABSTRACT

If the annual July 1 protest goes on into the future, it will not be the first series of annual large-scale public rallies in Hong Kong addressing a political issue. By the time the July 1, 2003 protest occurred, the 14th annual June 4 commemoration rally had already taken place. A call for democracy underlies both series of collective actions, though July 1 is primarily about democracy within the city of Hong Kong, and June 4 is primarily about democratization in China.
