ABSTRACT

The central argument of this book is that the two main problems of the construction industry are its persistently low profitability and its chronic failure to deliver projects predictably. All of the other problems of the industry – its low levels of investment and R&D, its poor safety record, its careless environmental impact, its apparent disregard for human capital, its poor record of customer satisfaction, its poor social status and low self-esteem – can, in one way or another, be traced back to these two. If these two fundamental problems could be solved, many of the industry's other problems would fall away.
