ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will look at how the culture of modernity has been exported across the world and the economic, ecological, and cultural impacts that it is currently having on human communities and their surrounding ecosystems. There are those who describe this process as a modern form of colonization. Others see it as an important way to insure universal human rights, and still others believe that globalizing Western industrial economic systems will end poverty and bring “undeveloped” countries into the civilized world.
