ABSTRACT

It was January already and my students were reading, but not to the best of their ability. They were ill-equipped with the strategies they could use to help them identify unknown words in a text. I realized I needed to do something more to help them to become the best readers they could be. Too often children are not equipped with the strategies they need to help them become great readers. They often rely on the same one or two strategies of word identification and find themselves at a loss when those strategies cannot help them. It was my goal in this action research and in my classroom everyday to help my students expand their knowledge and use of the various strategies to identify unknown words in a text.
