ABSTRACT

More police in the United States die from self-infl icted injuries than are killed in the line of duty (Mohandie & Hatcher, 1999). Many aware of this see this fact as proof that law enforcement is an exceptionally stressful occupation and that police work takes enormous emotional tolls on those who enter the fi eld (Volanti, 2004). No defi nitive study on police suicide exists to answer the many questions that exist about the mental health stresses of police work. This chapter will review what is known about suicide in relation to law enforcement, and what inferences and extrapolations are warranted.
