ABSTRACT

Murals from Ancient Egypt (3000 BC) depict men and women doing strength training. The first recorded training manual was written about 1400 BC. Written in Hittite cuneiform script it was found in the Palace at Boghazköy, at that time the capital of the Hittite Empire in the northern part of Central Anatolia. The manual, which is extremely detailed, describes the training required for chariot racing. Similarly the Chou Dynasty (1122-249 BC) in China seems to have been familiar with strength training. The test to join the army consisted of lifting heavy weights. It is thought that Confucius (551-479 BC) trained with weights of incremental size.
