ABSTRACT

If you hear a story, do you think first ‘How can I categorize it?’ Unless you are a folklorist or have an unusual obsession, probably not. The first thing you will do is respond to it, listen, accept, reject, be inspired by it, bored by it, whatever else. We don’t pass on stories in order to record an interesting example of a form; neither do we necessarily keep the story ‘shapes’ we absorb in separate mental boxes. They move easily through our imaginations across conceptual boundaries.
