ABSTRACT

The book you are reading now is a product of one area of the book industry: the college textbook segment. Media Today is available via the Kindle. Moreover, if you think of the “extra” materials that come with the print version of the book-the website and the terms you can download to your mobile device, for example-you will realize that in this area, too, book publishers in the new media environment are going beyond the printed page in various ways. Their biggest long-term concerns involve figuring out how to compete in a digital environment, in which paper is one way to deliver the information in books. The challenge, as they see it, is to keep the essential features of a book that have drawn readers over the centuries, while giving those features wondrous new digital spins that will keep the book healthy for centuries to come.
