ABSTRACT

The women whose stories are told in this book were exceptionally courageous. They made difficult choices, reflected on them when challenged, discussed them with others, researched them and, after they had reached the conclusion that they were still the right choices for them, they were prepared to put their heads above the parapet and defend them. Fighting their corner was emotionally and physically draining, however, and what all the women were hoping to find, and initially expecting to find, was an advocate within the maternity service. They sought an advocate who would support them in their choice to give birth at home simply because it was their choice, regardless of whether the professional herself considered it to be right or wrong.
