ABSTRACT

There seems to be a persistent belief in the public imagination, and perhaps in the professional one as well, that pregnant women are not able to think coherently. The NHS published a leaflet for expectant fathers in 2005 in which it stated:

Pregnant women are a bit vague . . . it’s their hormones. And have we mentioned the mood swings? So if she’s forgotten to pay the gas bill and is reduced to tears watching ‘Neighbours’, don’t worry, it’s normal.
