ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we explained that the main concern of students about assessment is frustration because they do not know and/or understand what their teachers expect them to do in assessment tasks, or what criteria and standards are applied by their teachers to judge the quality of their performances. We also introduced the idea that students regard assessment as fair if the process allows them an opportunity to demonstrate capability, and if the product, in the form of a mark or grade, indicates that their capability has been recognized. Furthermore, students have varying perceptions about what demonstrating capability means, and what is involved in demonstrating capability.
