ABSTRACT

AS WE SAW IN the story ofICEHOTEL (Chapter 13), con -tingencies can mark import - ant turning points in the history of a venture. In the case of the ICEHOTEL, rain on ice sculptures was an unpleasant surprise. It wasn’t what was meant to happen. But the ICEHOTEL story illustrates that contingencieseven negative ones-can be leveraged in positive ways. Instead of coping with the rain or trying to overcome it, Yngve Bergqvist did something a little less obvious: In his words, he “invented a new feeling”—instead of trying to preserve something against the forces of nature, he actually leveraged the natural process by letting the sculptures be destroyed and making something new in their place.
