ABSTRACT

There are young people who behave in unusual and bizarre ways. They talk to imaginary people, or behave in agitated or seemingly random ways that frighten people. Some wander the earth. These young people have two extremes. They make trouble or are they helpless or passive and do nothing. At either extreme they bring police and other agencies into their families. What is characteristic of such young people is that they are failures. They do not support themselves. They do not train successfully for a career. They do not form intimate relationships and therefore do not develop a normal social base outside the family. They are professional failures and their families must remain involved with them if only to reject them.
