ABSTRACT

When Wendy began weeping, her relatives and friends were surprised. It was her first birth and it had been relatively easy for her to reach this stage of motherhood. Her husband, Sammy, was irritated with her because he had work to do and the birth interfered with it. He was a reluctant father. When her doctor heard she was weeping, he was surprised and came in to cheer her up. He had seen many mothers who were depressed after delivery. He expected to discharge her to take the baby home, but he could not when she was weeping so severely. After a few days they had to discharge her from the hospital because they needed the space. When she was finally discharged, she wept as if she didn’t belong anywhere. This might have been because she did not know where to go with the baby. The couple decided to close up their home and take the baby home to the husband’s parents’ house since she didn’t seem ready to go to her own house. Because Wendy was weeping so much she said she could not take care of the baby in their own house.
