ABSTRACT

Models of crisis counseling can be confusing even for experienced practitioners. Ranging from a simple referral to a self-help group to the intensity of critical incident stress debriefing (CISD), such models can be as short as a single session or extended into six to eight weeks. The confusion about models can be reconciled by examining the current terminology describing crisis-related circumstances and developing a scaffolding for classifying treatment approaches. A threeby-three model is presented as structure for understanding the dimensionality of crisis intervention. Table 2.1 organizes the three dimensions with intensity, type, and treatment. Treatment examples are included.
